Someone might want to remind them that TMP and Hodes both had to segregate their media businesses from their agency businesses. The problem is that you can not make unbiased recommendations when you are the owner of one of the properties under consideration.

That said, the launch of Personified marks a profound inflection point for the newspaper industry.

Classified advertising is all but dead in the print form and online advertising services are rapidly eliminating the newspapers as players. CareerBuilder has compiled an astonishing and aggressive track record. It has played the game unlike any of its predecessors.

While the newspaper industry has been throwing money at the problem for nearly two decades, CareerBuilder is the first glimmer of success.

Growth is a challenging objective in a market where the basic unit price is always declining. In order for CareerBuilder to continue to meet growth objectives, it must crawl out from the advertising ghetto. Personified is their first attempt to do so.

If you’ll excuse a bit of vanity, their product and service offerings sound like a recapitulation of a decades worth of my writings. So, I have to think that the services themselves are really good ideas. If they can get the billing approach correct, this is a real threat to the already eroding advertising agency franchises. This is a good, smart, somewhat predictable move by CareerBuilder.

It’s where the newspapers have needed to go for a long time.

(January 15, 2008) Isn’t it weird that the labor shortage is happening in an explosion of data. It’s easier and easier to find information about people while it’s harder and harder to find them. The number of needles is declining while the size of the haystack is growing.

Isn’t that how it seems?

There are some pretty odd trends that amplify the problem.

The percentage of jobs that require advanced education is going up. The percentage of North Americans who get advanced education is going down.

In the face of a shortage, much recruiting focuses on the way a candidate looks rather than on performance. This is particularly true in intergenerational and interethnic recruiting.

The education system continues to prepare students for jobs in factories. The video game companies do a better job of preparing them for work.

Hiring based on credentials continues to vex both sides of the equation. Do you want someone with an accounting degree or someone who can do accounting? Credentials, which should be the last resort of a competent recruiter, are poor substitutes for a quality guarantee.

Inflationary pressures are driving turnover. It’s being reported as an increase in the unemployment rate.

The recession we are in is localized to housing and retail. Yet, companies with clear paths to increased growth and profitability are behaving like the recession is universal.

Now, more than ever, the most important piece of technology in your arsenal is between your ears.

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Getting up to speed about the latest trends in recruiting has become remarkably simple thanks to John Sumser.

Sumser, founder of the Recruiting Roadshow, literally brings his show to the recruiters, rather than asking them to travel thousands of miles. And his events are free. Add the fact that he is securing the industry’s leading experts as speakers, and it is easy to see why Sumser has become a popular figure with practicing recruiters.

The latest iteration of the Recruiting Roadshow arrives at the University of Dallas’ Graduate School of Management Development Center at the Frisco, TX campus on December 4. Its theme is “Bringing Physical Community to Social Networks.” For the particulars on how to sign up, visit http://recruitingroadshow.wordpress.com/.

“It is very important that we bring this show on the road so that we can learn what is really happening in the field,” said Sumser, an authority himself on how the Internet can be used as a sourcing and recruiting tool. “Recruiters attending this event will come away better equipped, more sharply focused and more intensely committed to the profession.”

Among the speakers are:

John Sumser

More than a decade ago, Sumser started his own company Interbiznet (www.interbiznet.com), where he wrote a daily column on using the Internet and technology for recruiting. A year later, he wrote the first book describing the Internet as a sourcing and recruiting tool. He continues to write for Interbiznet and is also the editor of Recruiting.com. Sumser regularly consults with recruiters and employers on how to find, hire and keep the best employees, how people work, how companies and systems affect employees and how changing economies and technology alter the nature of work itself. He also consults with recruiting startups and sits on the Board of Directors of Salary.com.

Bill Vick

Vick, driven by a passion for helping others pursue and achieve excellence, is one of the seminal figures in online recruiting and one of among the very first to write about Internet recruiting techniques as early as 1996. He has run his own retained executive recruiting firm for last 20 years and was the founder of the Recruiters OnLine Network along the way. A founder and board member of the Pinnacle Society recognizing achievement in the staffing industry, Vick is also a national speaker for NAPS, served on the Board of Directors of The Texas Association Staffing Services, was an officer with the Metroplex Association of Personnel Services as well as a founder of the local Dallas Independent Recruiters Group and a lifetime member of the USMC Force Recon Association.

Hank Stringer

Forecasting a talent shortage back in 1994, Stringer and a team of entrepreneurs started Hire.com. The company was the first to use an ASP business model, leveraging the Internet to scale and automate interactive recruiting relationships and processes. Stringer went on to co-author Talent Force: A New Manifesto for the Human Side of Business. He is currently helping to establish the vision and direction of itzbig (www.itzbig.com), an interactive sourcing network being embraced by both technology companies and job applicants.

“Industry leaders like Stringer and Vick are waiving thousands of dollars in appearance fees to participate in this event,” said Sumser. “They are sharing their insights about training and coaching, which — if applied — is priceless.”

Among the other anticipated participants are Steven Rothberg with CollegeRecruiter.com, Bill Vargas with Diversity.com, Martin Snyder and Bill Kubicek of Main Sequence Technologies/PCRecruiter, Dennis Smith with WorldLink, Matt Martone with Yahoo! HotJobs and Camille Roberts with ZoomInfo.

Interested media should contact Holt Hackney at hhackney@hackneycommunications.com, or 512-478-8858, Ext. 115.

Recruiters today are challenged with having to bridge an ever-widening gap in the demand and supply of good recruits. The only thing that narrows is the time in which candidate flow is expected.

The promise of social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace to make active and passive candidates easier to reach can sometimes widen the gap between daily grind and “best-practice.” The only thing that narrows is the attention span we can give to every new site, tool, application and widget that pops up.

Very few in the industry have been witness to the increasing pace and complexity of online recruiting from the time the first job board appeared up to today.

Even fewer have helped shape recruiters’ understanding of these things, laying the foundations for recruiting in a time where meshing emerging technologies with recruiting commonsense really does help bridge the gap.

Nobody has been at it longer than industry analyst and commentator John Sumser and Dallas-based Bill Vick, the original “big-biller” and recruiting coach.

John and Bill invite you to a day of interactive learning where they will give you the insights, tools and support you will need to start bridging the gaps in supply and demand and understanding and practice:

Minneapolis, Minnesota – September 24, 2007- Arbita, the leading provider of global job advertising distribution solutions, is pleased to announce that Don Ramer, CEO and Founder, will be serving as a Learning Track Leader at the Atlanta Recruiting Roadshow on September 25, 2007 at the Bill Moore Student Success Center on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology. Don will be speaking on the negative effects of “antisocial networking” and impersonal recruitment practices that limit candidate referrals, prolong fill times, and increase the cost-per-hire.

Don will illustrate an essential link between process and acquisition, encouraging the adaptation of recruitment methods to meet the individual needs of the jobseeker. He will outline the necessary steps toward improved workplace conditions and refined networking practices.

“Don Ramer is the recruiting industry’s role model for integrity and accountability,” says John Sumser, the Roadshow’s organizer and keynote speaker. “When he speaks about effectiveness in recruiting, it comes from over 25 years in various aspects of the business. His company, Arbita, is modeling and defining the future of the industry. I am really looking forward to Don’s talk at the Roadshow. One of our goals at the Roadshow is to introduce the next generation of recruiting leadership to each other. I know that this is a pet project of Don’s. We’re glad to have his support and participation.”

“It’s important that we understand the human needs of our candidates,” says Don Ramer. “Candidate retention and acquisition is highly dependent on genuine communication between jobseeker and recruiter. The process and methods of recruitment must not interfere with direct human interaction, and the way in which networking operates greatly influences the success or failure of an organization. I’m pleased to lead a discussion that will focus on a solutions-centric approach toward the establishment of truly inspired workplaces,” he concluded.

Jupiter, Florida – August 23, 2007 – RCI Recruitment Solutions has teamed up with one of the recruiting industry’s most prominent leaders John Sumser, to underwrite and coordinate a series of local events under the newly-created Recruiting Roadshow organization, starting with the Atlanta Recruiting Roadshow on September 25th, 2007.

John Sumser said, “For a very long time, we have behaved as if recruiting were a profession that is practiced identically from setting to setting. The trouble is that the labor market is different from town to town with differing levels of demand, differing levels of supply and deeply differing manners and procedures. While the recruiting industry is globalized, the real labor market is excruciatingly local.” John continued to say, “The goal of each individual Recruiting Roadshow is to cause members of the local recruiting world who may not have easy access to the industry’s network infrastructure to have access to each other.”

The Recruiting Roadshow is being delivered along the lines of an “unconference” where the content of the sessions is driven and created by the participants. The Atlanta Recruiting Roadshow is a prototype for planned events throughout the U.S. and is entirely supported by industry and community activists. These are people who share Sumser’s vision to keep the focus squarely on the recruiters coming together for a day of learning, networking and community, free from sales pitches and thinly-veiled hype.

The Atlanta Recruiting Roadshow is being held on the campus of Georgia Tech and runs from 8:30AM through 5:30PM. The day’s events include keynote presentations from John Sumser who will be discussing intergenerational recruiting and a presentation by Steven Rothberg, Founder and President of CollegeRecruiter.com who will be sharing insights about using social networks like MySpace and Facebook for recruiting.

During the day there will be networking opportunities centered around a variety of activities which include learning tracks led by Atlanta-based recruiting celebrities like Shally Steckerl and Eric Jaquith, and roundtable sessions led by seasoned local recruiting leaders like Alan Lee (formerly with HomeBanc Mortgage, Wachovia, Bank of America, Coca-Cola and others), and Frank Speer (formerly with Tom James, Acuity Brands and now with RCI Recruitment Solutions.)

Alan Lee and Frank Speer will be joined on that day by other key figures from the local recruiting industry and veterans like Don Ramer, who is highly regarded as a thought-leader and teacher in the recruiting space.

About the Recruiting Roadshow

In its mission of “Bringing Physical Community to Social Networks” the Recruiting Roadshow is scheduled to visit Atlanta, Washington, DC, Miami, Dallas, San Francisco and other regional centers in the coming months.

Each event is designed to give recruiters and their teams an invaluable experience where learning and community are encouraged above all else. Each event including a networking lunch and learning materials are entirely supported by sponsors making the day’s events free-of-charge to participating professionals.
